Columbus Day 2008
The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, held to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the Western Hemisphere, is one of my favorite moments in American history both for what it tells us about the city of Chicago at the end of the 19th century, and for its telling expression of American culture at that time.by Childe Hassam (1893)
