21st Century Journalism XX: Innovations in Newspapers
Rebecca MacKinnon, Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong's Journalism and Media Studies Centre, provides a good summary of the 2007 Innovation News Readership Survey (pdf), conducted by Harris Interactive and published by Innovation, a media consulting group. Both readers and non-readers in seven countries the US, UK, France, Germany, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia were asked about their perceptions of the media, with particular attention to newspapers.
All of the survey findings are of interest. I personally was taken with the support the public gives to maintaining coverage of international affairs, as opposed to being tightly focused on local news.
