21st Century Journalism XX: Innovations in Newspapers
Rebecca MacKinnon, Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong's Journalism and Media Studies Centre, provides a good summary of the 2007 Innovation News Readership Survey (pdf), conducted by Harris Interactive and published by Innovation, a media consulting group. Both readers and non-readers in seven countries — the US, UK, France, Germany, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia — were asked about their perceptions of the media, with particular attention to newspapers.
All of the survey findings are of interest. I personally was taken with the support the public gives to maintaining coverage of international affairs, as opposed to being tightly focused on local news.
